Gallery > Ghost of the Games

Since 2014, my geometrically structured paintings have explored form, balance, pattern, movement, and 2-to-3-dimensional play. During this period, the ghost of the games continued to intrude, haunt, and guide. Questions of cumulative stratagy, rule, response, sequence, addressed when designing (or playing on) morris or backgammon, still took me through a project from beginning to completion. Each move, as in a game of chess, gave the next something to deal with, as the painting increased in complexity and resolution.

Nostalgia for my games caught me placing 'men' - floating, wandering circles and triangles - around the painting, articulating the larger design and seeming to look for their way 'home'.
